The Church Sent: Growing by Making Disciples

Church growth isn’t about numbers; it’s about maturity. In an age when we deem what is popular to be best, it’s important to remember that in church, best isn’t biggest by default. The goal of the church is to mature followers of Jesus. The church unifies believers in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. The church stabilizes believers in the face of the winds of doctrine developed in popular culture. The church builds resistance in believers against the trickery and craftiness of evil schemes. And the church instructs believers to help them grow to look like Christ. These are the marks of maturity that the church aims for in its members. We pray for many of these kinds of mature members in our congregation. Five hundred mature saints are better than fifty. But fifty mature Christians are better than five hundred who have little faith, no stability or resistance, and ignorance of God’s Word. God created the church for a reason. It’s more than a social club, concert, or connection space where it’s the more, the merrier. The church is a body that needs to grow into its mature Head, that is, Christ. It does this through the supply of every member, every part supplying what will bring growth. When this is our aim, we’ll be less worried about our average attendance and more worried about our spiritual ability. – Pastor Rory
