The minor prophets are an important part of God’s Word.
We sometimes relegate them to insignificance. They are often difficult to understand, and we’d rather focus on the New Testament than obscure parts of the Old Testament. But these prophetic books advance the message of the Bible in important ways.
The minor prophets show us that sin has consequences. God can’t ignore sin forever; it must be judged. Although we don’t enjoy reading about judgment, we need the minor prophets’ reminder. And in doing so, these prophets help us appreciate the merciful sacrifice of Christ in taking God’s judgment for us.
The minor prophets also remind us of God’s promises and His faithfulness to keep them. Often our sin stems from forgetting all that God has promised us or from our doubt that He will keep His promises. The minor prophets point to the promises God has made for His people and their redemption. We need this because our salvation rests completely on God’s promises.
Most of all, it is impossible to read the minor prophets and miss the character of God. In addition to God’s judgment, promises, faithfulness, and mercy, the minor prophets show His speaking, power, and numerous other attributes. Israel had forgotten their God and had turned to idols. The minor prophets offer the needed reminder that our God is still the great and glorious Creator of all. He alone is worthy of our worship and trust.
So pay attention to the minor prophets like Amos. They are worth our study, and their reminders make them worth the read. Let the glory and majesty of God in all that He does and the fulfillment of His plan move you to worship. Don’t waste the minor prophets. –Pastor Rory
