A Lord Who Teaches

Jesus actually rose from the dead. This fact has been the hope of Christians for centuries. Although some would accuse us of foolish optimism, this is actual history. Luke highlights the historical reality of Jesus’s resurrection in Jesus’s walk to Emmaus. Jesus joins two of His disciples on the seven mile journey. People don’t endure crucifixion one day, and then walk seven miles three days later. The only way Jesus could have walked that distance on that day is if He actually rose again. Jesus also joined them for a meal. If Jesus were a figment of their optimistic imagination, He wouldn’t have eaten real food. He ate food only because He was actually alive and could put food in His body. The reality of the resurrection explains why Jesus’s teachings moved the men as they did. The men who walked with Him wondered at how His teaching caused their hearts to burn. It’s because Jesus’s resurrection is the culmination of the Old Testament prophets. His resurrection is the hope that underlies the entirety of Scripture. The reality of the resurrection should impact us in the same way. It turns us to the Scriptures for our hope. It opens our eyes to see the truth of what God is doing in us and through us. Our hope finds its ground in an actual historical event, and it transforms us. The men on the road to Emmaus saw Christ, and it changed them. Look on Him again; He will change your life likewise. – Pastor Rory
