The Reigning Spirit of Christ

One of the most important questions we must determine in our lives is who will be king. When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday almost two thousand years ago, He made a claim to be king. He was God’s promised Messiah, the Son of David, who came in the name of the Lord. The question at that time and still today is whether we will submit to Him as King. The competition could be between other so-called gods and Jesus. Things like government, material things, and future plans desire the throne of our hearts. But most often, the competition is between us and Jesus. Will we put ourselves on the throne and serve our flesh, or will we put Christ on the throne and serve the Spirit? The irony of the question is that true freedom comes only from submission to Christ as King. We can convince ourselves that God’s way is bondage and that our way is freedom. But to submit to Christ and serve the Spirit is true freedom, bringing life and peace. To serve our flesh and submit to our desires is an enslaving law of sin and death. Palm Sunday is a reminder of this persistent battle. It helps us answer the question, “Who will be king of our lives?” We must remember that Jesus is the true King, and He will reign; the only remaining question to answer is when. Will He reign in our lives now, or when every knee will bow? – Pastor Rory
