Out of the Depths

The weight of our sin often discourages us as we look for a remedy.

When we come face to face with our depravity, we can identify with the words of the psalmists. For example, the psalmist of Psalm 130 felt like he was in the depths, crying out to God because of his sin. David echoes that sentiment in Psalm 32 when he described the impact of trying to hide his sin. He said he felt like his body was wasting away like in the heat of summer. These feelings come from not only the sin itself, but also the just judgment our sin deserves. They leave us searching for a remedy, something to offer relief.

But our search for a remedy will leave us feeling hopeless if we look to ourselves. We are unable to pull ourselves out of the pit of our sin, nor can we remedy the oppression with self-improvement. We need someone better than ourselves, someone with unending mercy and abundant forgiveness.

In other words, we need the Lord God. He offers the pardon of forgiveness. He gives the hope of His Word. He works the abundance of redemption. He does all this without violating His perfect justice. When Christ died on the cross, God punished our sins on Him, so that He could be the just justifier of those who have faith.

Through Christ’s sacrifice, God frees us from the condemnation our sin deserves. He forgives us, lifts us out of the depths, and offers us the perfect remedy for the weight of sin. In doing so, He encourages us with hope as He welcomes us into everlasting life with Him. Don’t let sin weigh you down or discourage you; find the remedy in the Lord our God. He loved you and gave His life for you; look to Him for hope! –Pastor Rory
