To be human is to fear. This stems from our finite human nature. Our finite power, knowledge, and control cause us to fear what we can’t overpower, don’t know, and can’t control. Sometimes fear can be healthy. Peter encourages us to have a healthy fear that changes the way we live. “Conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth” (1 Pt 1:17). His command corresponds to the teaching in Proverbs that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Pr 9:10). But fear can be unhealthy as well. It is particularly unhealthy when we fear people. Our fear of man allows people to control us instead of God. This kind of fear is illustrated in the religious leaders of Jesus’ day. Their fear of man caused them to refuse to acknowledge Jesus as God’s Messiah. They wanted the people to keep respecting them, so they refused to change their minds about Jesus. This fear finally led to their secretive trial and the injustice they showed Christ. Their fear of man, born in a desire to maintain control, allowed the crowds to control them instead. This is a temptation we all face. But we must fear God instead of man. Only then will we give control to one whose control, knowledge, and power are perfect. –Pastor Rory
