A King Who Serves

The world would have us believe that true greatness is achieved by either building one’s legacy, asserting one’s influence, or exercising one’s control over circumstances or people. Ever since Genesis 3, mankind has been attempting to gain the status of “greatness” as if their identity and purpose depend on it. As Jesus nears the cross in Luke 22, he reveals the presence of a betrayer within His inner circle of disciples. Rather than evaluating their hearts and motives, the disciples attempt to prove their loyalty by arguing about who is the greatest among themselves. You can imagine how disappointed Jesus may have felt. But instead of rebuking them, Jesus gently redirects them: “I am among you as the one who serves.” He redefines greatness—not as power or prestige, but as serving others. In the shadow of betrayal and the cross, Jesus teaches us that true discipleship flows from humility and complete dependence on God’s strength, not self-confidence. Jesus invites us to pray, to depend on His grace, and to trust that He equips us for every good work. In a world obsessed with self-promotion and recognition, Luke 22:21–38 points us back to the way of the cross: humble service, confident dependence on God, and a life shaped by the example of Christ. –Pastor Nate
