When Christ Rules, Gratitude Reigns

This is the time of year when we in America take the fourth Thursday of every November to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy. As “forced” upon you as it may seem, taking the time to give thanks is always a good thing. Perhaps the reason why we struggle with the concept of expressing our gratitude as often and as heartfelt as we should is because we maintain too close a connection to the things of this world. The cares and worries of this life can easily dominate our attention and control our affections. We find it easier to complain rather than give thanks. In Colossians 3:15–17, Paul calls believers to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts and the Word of Christ dwell richly within them. As we enter the Thanksgiving season, these verses remind us that gratitude is not merely a holiday sentiment—it is the atmosphere of a life shaped by Christ’s lordship. His peace steadies us when circumstances shift, and His Word anchors our minds when worries rise. Thanksgiving becomes more than a day on the calendar; it becomes a posture we carry into every moment, acknowledging that every good gift comes from the loving hand of our heavenly Father. Paul also urges the church to do everything “in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This means that gratitude is woven into both our worship and our work. As we gather around for our Thanksgiving dinners this coming week, purposefully recount the ways God’s grace has sustained you—through trials, joys, provision, and growth. When you step back into daily routines after the holiday, consider carrying this same spirit of thankfulness with you, regardless of your circumstances. Let your hearts be ruled by the peace of Christ, so that our conversations, service, and decisions become opportunities to express the grateful worship He deserves. May this Thanksgiving lead us to a deeper, fuller dependence on the One from whom all blessings flow. –Pastor Nate
