Jesus is God, and He is the King promised in the Old Testament. But Jesus is more than only the King of the Jews. Jesus’s three years of public ministry were not so much about establishing a Jewish monarchy. Instead, Jesus was about ruling in the hearts of people regardless of their ethnicity. He came to be the King for all. We see this throughout Luke’s gospel. Simeon noted this when he had the opportunity to see baby Jesus calling Him, “A light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.” Jesus quoted Isaiah 61 to begin His ministry highlighting His ministry to outsiders. Jesus’s parables also highlight this reality as Jesus tells the parables of the lost coin, sheep, and sons. Jesus’s ministry was never intended to bless only one people group. God’s promise to Abraham was to bless all peoples through the promised seed. Jesus’s offer to be the King for all culminates in His commissioning of His disciples. The goal is for repentance for forgiveness of sins to be proclaimed to all nations. We are the recipients of this proclamation, but as followers of Jesus, we are also participants in it. Jesus is the King for all; it is our responsibility to join Him in calling all people to submit to Him, the true King. – Pastor Rory
