A Messiah Who Perseveres

Temptations come to everyone. James says that each one is tempted when drawn away by desires (Jms 1:14). Temptations also have a way of escape. Paul reminds us that our temptations are not unique but that God provides an out when we face them (1 Cor 10:13). Sometimes our temptations feel like a thorn in the flesh. These Scriptures point to the sufficiency of God’s grace and how His strength shines in weakness (2 Cor 12:9). Sometimes we see immovable mountains in our temptations. In these, we can lean on Christ’s words that faith can move mountains (Mk 11:23). Sometimes we see everyone else giving in, and we follow their lead. In these, we must think of Jesus’s endurance in the wilderness. Yes, even Jesus endured temptation, but He came out righteous. This is no small matter for it is His strength that moves the mountains. It is His grace that provides our sufficiency. It is His example that we follow. We can endure too. And in our endurance, we’ll look like Jesus to the glory of God. Don’t give up; don’t give in; God will strengthen you in Jesus Christ with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience (Col 1:11). –Pastor Rory
