Have you ever been around someone with whom it seemed you could do nothing right? In one minute, they may outline their disappointed expectations. Then, in the next, they change those expectations again as you try to meet them. The religious leaders in Jesus’s day were like this. They didn’t listen to John the Baptist because he ate no bread and drank no wine. They said he had a demon. So Jesus came along eating and drinking, and they condemned Him as a glutton and a drunkard. They were impossible to please. John felt the weight of these expectations and their disapproval as he questioned some of what he himself had proclaimed about Jesus. When the weight of others’ expectations is on us, we need to remember who we are before Jesus. Other people can bury us with their own righteous standards. Sometimes, they will even tie their expectations back to God to make them extra weighty. But our standing isn’t dependent on being able to keep the standards of others or even the standards of God. Our identity in Christ makes us righteous before God by His good pleasure alone. Don’t let the expectations of others, yourself, or the law of God get you down. Jesus came to bear the weight of the expectations for you and free you to live for His glory. Let the expectations rest on Him. –Pastor Rory
