Self-centeredness is a common human problem. It focuses our attention on ourselves and causes us to ignore others. When we ignore others, we ignore their problems, and we fail to show compassion. When Jesus came to earth, He never gave in to the sin of self-centeredness. His coming itself is an example of His caring about others more than His own self-interest. Beyond that, He went to the cross to die for sins He didn’t commit. He demonstrated this selfless love in His ministry as well. In doing so, He stands in contrast to the self-centered religious leaders. Where the religious leaders saw a problem, Jesus saw a person. Instead of ignoring the problems of others, Jesus showed loving compassion for them. Jesus saw their suffering and made the conscious choice to help them. When Paul spoke of Christ’s selfless sacrifice, he encouraged the Philippians to share this mindset (Php 2:5). And so He encourages us. Let this compassionate, loving mindset be yours. Care about the interests of others, and love like Jesus loved you. – Pastor Rory
