Imagine getting an invitation to dinner with the President. How would you respond? Most of us would make time for that. Imagine turning him down, saying you need to go test drive a new car or to celebrate your two-month wedding anniversary. The only reason someone would try to excuse himself in such a way is to take the invitation for granted. This is a kind of pride. This attitude reflects too high a view of one’s own importance and too low a view of the importance of the invitation. Many people consider the invitation of God of a similar low importance. God has made His glory known in creation and invites the people He made to come to Him for life. But many turn away from the feast that He has prepared. They dismiss it in arrogance, thinking it is unimportant, or worse, not entertaining. But these responses do not deter God. God’s feast will be full, but not of those we would think are deserving. The facts are that no one deserves to feast with God, but God fills His feast with those who, though undeserving, have had their eyes opened to see Who is inviting them and to what He has invited them. In this, we have a reminder of the humility needed to follow Christ. This isn’t about us. We don’t belong without God making us belong. And God is merciful and kind to welcome even those intending to pass by to join His feast. Knowing this must keep us humble and guard our hearts against religious pride. – Pastor Rory
