A Shepherd Who Saves

I  remember a time in my childhood when a teacher asked me about a mess that wasn’t cleaned up. In fear of wrath and the consequences, I lied about my responsibility and denied my knowledge. The temptation to deny our actions for fear of the consequences is so common that we even respond this way to God. We assume God is like humans, quick to anger and vengeful. We forget that the Scriptures teach that God is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth (Ex 34:6). Jesus highlighted this reality in His application of the parable of the lost sheep. He emphasized that heaven erupts with joy at the repentance of a sinner. God isn’t impressed by righteous people who don’t need to repent, because none of them exist. Instead, He rejoices when people acknowledge their sin and turn away from it. We don’t have to fear God’s wrath when we confess sin and repent; we have only to accept His mercy. He won’t be angry. He’ll be rejoicing that another sinner is dealing with his sin, for He desires all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. –Pastor Rory
