A Heart That Hears

When we consider death, it is not uncommon to feel some trepidation. For many people, death’s unknowns are incredibly fearful. The loss of all that we have worked towards and the loved ones around us is alarming. The fear of no longer feeling in control while passing from this life to the next can be overwhelming. The knowledge of missing out on family events or failing to accomplish our bucket list can bring some level of sadness. The thought of no longer existing or, worse, spending eternity in hell, is unimaginable. But Jesus provides some unique insight into life after death in Luke 16. It’s here that Luke records the parable Jesus tells regarding a certain beggar and rich man (v19-31). In this parable, Jesus describes the suffering the rich man experiences due to his sinful behavior and lack of repentance. The beggar, on the other hand, a man named Lazarus, experienced comfort and peace. This parable is not intended to convey this idea of “karma” per se, but rather it depicts the judgment we all deserve. Death should be fearful for the one living life apart from God. But for the believer whose hope and trust are in Christ, the joy of freedom from pain and suffering is a reality that will be enjoyed. The story of Lazarus and the rich man shows us the great reversal that is coming. Don’t lose heart. Do not fear death. May our desire always be that of the Apostle Paul’s—“To be with Christ, for that is far better.” –Pastor Nate
