A Brother Who Forgives

Repentance is a vital part of the Christian life. In fact, repentance is the mark of a true Christian. It is because we are aware of our standing in Christ and our forgiveness through His sacrifice that we can admit our sin and turn from it. We recognize the importance of repentance in our relationship with God, but we can downplay it in our human relationships. This may be because we overlook our relationships with each other. We assume that our human relationships aren’t as important as our relationship with God. However, repentance is also vital to human relationships. Although we should strive not to sin against each other, we inevitably will. When we do, we must be quick to acknowledge our sin and to turn from it, rather than continuing to hurt each other. Additionally, when someone sins against us, we must imitate God in our forgiveness. We are always tempted to hold a grudge against those who hurt us or sin against us. But despite the hurt, we must forgive as we have been forgiven. If this sounds difficult, it’s because it is. We don’t have the ability or desire to forgive in ourselves. But this motivates us to further faith and trust in God. By His gracious Spirit, we can avoid sin against each other, and we can forgive when someone sins against us. –Pastor Rory
