Prophets Testify

It’s easy to grow complacent without ever realizing it. Take your physical health, for example. If we stop taking our vitamins regularly or become lax about physical exercise or healthy eating, the results are not readily apparent. Oftentimes, it takes weeks, if not months, before the negative effects are even noticed. But even still, due to the gradual nature of our decline, the felt differences seem minimal. The reality is, our spiritual health is no different.

In the book of Amos, Israel had grown comfortable in their sin, neglecting justice, holiness, and obedience. The Lord’s warning in Amos 3 teaches us that God does not overlook the sins of His people simply because they bear His name. In love, He confronts and disciplines those who belong to Him. This passage is a wake-up call. Are we merely enjoying the blessings of God while drifting from wholehearted devotion to Him? The repeated questions in chapter 3 emphasize the fact that choices have consequences, especially foolish ones. Just as a lion roars because it has prey, God’s judgment comes with purpose and warning. But before He acts, He graciously speaks through His Word. This should stir us to listen carefully whenever Scripture exposes sin, complacency, or spiritual apathy in our lives. Too often, we ignore small compromises, assuming they are insignificant, but Amos reminds us that God sees beneath outward appearances. For believers, this is not merely a call to fear judgment, but an invitation to repentance and renewed fellowship with the Lord. As we walk in repentance and faith, may we display the beauty of a people who take God seriously and treasure His grace deeply. – Pastor Nate
