We often face temptations to find a way to live apart from God. Our consumer culture encourages us to seek more stuff and live. Our scientific modernism pushes us to seek doctors and live. Our culture’s safetyism compels us to seek all precautions and live. The entertainment industry would have us seek our pleasures and live. I could go on. Now, before you object, please know that having stuff, getting health advice, acting safely, or enjoying pleasure are not wrong. In themselves, these things are good gifts from God to make our lives better. The problem comes when we make those things our primary or only pursuit. We all set priorities; this helps us discern what is worth our time and what is not. But the top priority for everyone must be God and one’s relationship with Him. If we want to live, we must prioritize seeking God, for He is the source of life. This was God’s message to Israel, which faced the temptation to seek peace, prosperity, and its own gods. Three times in Amos, God tells them whom to seek so they can live. The problem is that they chose arrogance and sought life in other places. Thus, God declared that they would end up in exile. We can avoid their fate; we can live. But we must seek God and His good if we will. Seek God, and live! – Pastor Rory
