The FIFA World Cup has now reached the quarterfinals. I’m not necessarily a “soccer fan” per se, but I do enjoy watching the World Cup each time around. After weeks of exciting matches, only eight teams remain. Every pass, every decision, and every mistake carries greater weight because the stakes only increase with each round. Teams that once looked unbeatable have already been sent home, reminding us that the final outcome is never determined by appearances but by what is revealed when the pressure is greatest. As the tournament narrows toward its champion, I’m reminded by our study in Amos that history is also moving toward a decisive day—not a championship match, but the day when every heart will stand before the righteous Judge.
Amos 8:4–9:10 is a sobering reminder that God is not indifferent to injustice or empty religion. Israel’s outward religion concealed hearts that loved themselves more than God. Because of this, the Lord warned that judgment was coming, including a famine—not merely of bread, but of hearing the Word of God. The same God who patiently calls sinners to repentance also upholds His holiness and justice. This passage invites us to examine our own hearts and our tendency to measure success by comfort, achievement, or personal gain rather than by faithfulness to Christ. The Lord desires worship that flows from sincere love, humble repentance, and obedient hearts that treasure His Word. Yet Amos does not leave us without hope. The judgment he announces points us to Christ, who willingly bore God’s righteous wrath in the place of sinners. Jesus stands as the living Word who satisfies every spiritual famine and the righteous King before whom every knee will one day bow. May we fall before Him in humble worship, treasure His Word, and live with hearts that reflect His justice, mercy, and truth. – Pastor Nate
