When God says He is going to do something, He does it. It doesn’t matter how much we debate or doubt; God is going to do what He says. Gideon found this out when God called him to deliver Israel from the Midianites. First, Gideon wondered about how it would happen. In response, God assured him that He would go with Gideon into battle. Then Gideon wondered if God meant what He said. In response, God twice performed a miracle with dew to provide assurance. Finally, knowing Gideon’s fear, God directs him to go listen in on the Midianite camp to give him boldness. He hears about a dream that symbolizes his victory in the battle. In spite of Gideon’s doubt, God was working to keep His Word to defeat Midian. In fact, in the end, it is clear that God won the victory much more than Gideon. This reminds me that God keeps His promises. It may not be the way we expect, but no amount of debate or doubt can stop it. Think about our salvation. God is the only one powerful enough to save sinners from their self-destruction. And He promises to do it. Sometimes we debate how and who God is saving, and sometimes we doubt that God is saving. But we are children of God because we believe His Word. So we count on His promise and reject our debate and doubt so that He can show His might. When you read God’s promises, remember the story of Gideon. Don’t waste your time doubting and debating, but instead rest in the faithfulness of God and His Word. –Pastor Rory
