Blessings Through Baptist Biography

When you think about the gospel, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Perhaps it’s Christ’s death on the cross, peace with God, eternal life, grace, justification, etc. All of these are fundamental for understanding the gospel. But a word that should readily come to mind is “love.” Perhaps John 3:16 came to mind (“God so loved the world…“). In Scripture, God’s love is expressed as both a cause and a result. Certainly, it’s because of God’s love that the plan of redemption was enacted (1 Pet 1:20; Jn 3:16; Rom 5:8). But, God’s love doesn’t stop there. In Romans chapter 5, the Apostle Paul describes God’s love as being poured into the hearts of every believer (v5). The opening paragraph of this chapter is packed full of gospel truth and implications. The good news of salvation doesn’t stop with a prayer of repentance and an act of faith. The gospel is foundational for our progressive sanctification and lasting hope. There is a past reality that is vital for us to remember (1 Cor 6:11; 11:23-25), but there is a present and future reality that we must not neglect. God hasn’t simply given His love, but Paul says that God poured out His love, clearly showing its abundance and continual effects. It’s because of God’s active love that we can enjoy intimate fellowship with Him. It’s because of God’s faithful love that we can rest assured of His promises. It’s because of God’s compelling love that we can love in return. And, it’s because of God’s generous love that we can benefit from His indwelling Holy Spirit (v5b). The gospel is good news that never stops being good or relevant. Keep reminding yourself of God’s love demonstrated towards you in the death of His Son on your behalf (v8). And keep living in light of God’s never-ending transformative love poured out for you through His Holy Spirit. –Pastor Nate
